CHAPTER FOURTEEN
When Claire headed off for New York she asked Brad, Donovan, and Michael, who was feeling much better, to clear the rest of the land. There was about twenty-five percent of the property still under weeds and tall grass.
Emma decided to go with Claire. Neither of them liked the idea of her being so close to Brock without a referee. The divorce had been brutal, and while Emma had not known Brock well enough to have a problem with him, she did expect there to be harsh feelings. She would need someone to run interference. They both knew that there was no way Claire would only see Brock at the cemetery. He would see to that.
Bailey had stayed in her room since her experience in the bathroom. She refused to even eat at first but finally relented when she saw how much she was worrying her parents. Donovan had found her when he heard her screams. Sheâd been on the floor with her knees to her chest, her head buried in her knees, a huge cut on her forehead from the mirror bleeding profusely over her arms and the legs of the pajamas she had been wearing.
Claire had taken Bailey to the emergency room to have her cut stitched up since Emma was having a violent vomiting attack and Michael had been working despite his own illness. The cut took twenty stitches to close and there would be a pretty prominent scar. Bailey was extremely distraught over this. She went to a school where everyone was criticized if so much as a freckle was shown in a personâs appearance and she was still at an age where she very much cared what other people thought of her.
Emma had told her that she could have the rest of the week off school since she was sick anyway, but that she would have to go back first thing on Monday. Emma and Claire's offer to help her find a hairstyle that covered the scar was not acknowledged, and she had been pouting in her room ever since.
Claire had been questioned by the doctors about Baileyâs state of mind and repeatedly asked if there had been any changes in her behavior and if she had been depressed at all. She hadnât given Bailey this piece of information, but she told Emma immediately that they might have a problem. Bailey had told the doctor that she had slipped getting out of the shower and her face hit the mirror. Claire had thought it was a reasonable excuse at the time, but she could tell from the doctorâs line of questioning that they thought she did it to herself.
After seeing Claire and Emma off as they left for the airport, Donovan was now getting a riding lawn mower ready to go and he flashed a thumbs-up sign to Michael and Brad who were working several feet away with weed whackers. They were a long way back from the house, almost clean back to the woods, but Claire owned all this land too.
